SDS Celebrates Independence at a number of Fourth of July Parades

Students for a Democratic Society, 08.07.2008 18:22

Throughout the day on July 4th, Milwaukee Students for a Democratic Society walked into many parades and "celebrated" the real "freedom" and "independence" of the United States.

SDS followed Right-wing Milwaukee County Executive, Scott Walker in a number of the parades. Receiving more applause and praise than Walker.

this is another action in this Summer of Resistance.

Yeah, I DEFINATELY thought that went well. Although I am a little disappointed we didn't get to follow Scott Walker in the Shorewood parade. People are with us- let's keep going.

This action definitely took courage and the fact that you were following Scott Walker around made it comical!!

I know a lot of people here would disagree with me on this, but you should consider who you are aiming your message at and how it will impact them.

For instance, making right-wingers contemplate a peace sign might be better than have the word "imperialism" written over everything. It might be cool to have a shouting match with someone, but it's a lot more effective to have a polite conversation.

It's your own show, but just for the sake of argument, pay attention to who you are and where you're at.

People don't disagree with what message they broadcast: Just, many right-wingers have lived through the sixties, and see the peace sign as reflecting something naïve and idealistic. Imperialism may not sound appealing either, but that's why the sign with the 740 bases statistic comes in handy.

Also, the report of a "shouting match" is false. The "match" was one old veteran shouting about supporting the troops, to which one protester eagerly agreed, marking the end of the "match."
